About Us
The focus of Relay Kitchen is to maximize convenience in the kitchen via functional, beautiful, robust products with just the right mix of technology.
Relay Kitchen LLC was founded in 2018, although its founder Michael has been working on the idea for the RK1 Hands-Free Grinder for several years. A long-time a cooking enthusiast, Michael had the idea for this product after being frustrated by the need to constantly wash hands every time he picked up a pepper grinder, especially during preparation of raw foods.
After seeing touch-free faucets, soap dispensers, and paper towel dispensers rise in popularity, Michael wondered why nobody had created a similar solution for salt/pepper grinders. It turns out that it is extremely technically challenging to make a hands-free grinder: first, hands-free grinders would require an automatic shutoff feature to prevent debris from falling out; second, it would be very difficult to fit all the mechanics for grind size adjustment, self-closing shutoff, gear-drive motors, etc. without making a hands-free device overly large and expensive.
After many rounds of design, prototyping, and testing, Michael finally came up with a design that solved all the technical issues. Additionally, the design evolved to capture a distinct aesthetic quality, exhibiting subtle yet modern geometry, with construction using high-quality materials such as machined aluminum and stainless steel. The resulting design is intended to meet the expectations of premium customers, and match a variety of kitchen styles.
Several unique aspects of the design, such as the self-closing feature and hands-free actuation mechanism have patents filed/pending.
The RK1 Grinder is still under development, and will be available for purchase soon. Relay Kitchen has a variety of other innovative and technologically advanced products queued in its development roadmap.
